Anaerobic digestion is a biological process that takes place in the absence of oxygen
- Hydrolysis: Carbohydrate, protein and fat into smaller molecules.
- Acidogenesis: Fermenting bacteria breaks down monomers into smaller molecules i.e. H2, CO2, acetate and other products
- Acetogenesis: Acetogens further digest simple molecules to mainly acetic acid, H2, CO2
- Methanogenesis: Archaea produce methane from hydrogen and carbon dioxide or acetate
